DREAD

CTIN 488 | Fall 2022

Game Design Workshop

Our first individual assignment in this class revolved around emotion. Each student was given a different emotion, and were tasked with designing a boardgame that made the players feel that emotion. Mine was "dread."

BRAINSTORMING

Soulsnatcher_premise.png

My original idea for Soulsnatcher was a 3v1 Battleship / Clue type game, where 3 Children would play against the Soulsnatcher with the goal of finding all 13 ancient relics to win. The Children and the Soulsnatcher play on two separate boards, and they can not see each other's movements.  Whenever a Child collects a relic, the Soulsnatcher uses his interdimensional powers and can knows the location of where the relic was taken. The Soulsnatcher's objective is to use that information and hunt down the Children by guessing their location on the board.

PLAYTESTING

This project taught me the importance of PLAYTESTING when designing games! It is so important to take note of how players interact with your game, how they react, what they say during the game, how well they understand the rules, etc. While my game was not perfect, by the end of the project I was confident that players would feel dreadful.

FINAL PROJECT

CTIN 488 | Fall 2022

Game Design Workshop

Our final project involved pitching your own game idea to the class. Everyone would pitch their own game, and the class was split up into different teams that work on a select few of the pitches (voted by the class). My pitch for Soulsnatcher was one of the chosen games, and I was given the opportunity to work with a team and improve upon the foundation that I built earlier in the semester!

I mainly lead the visual art direction of the game, while my teammates improved upon the gameplay mechanics, rules, and board construction.

Game Development Fundamentals

Flash forward to next semester, this class revolved around digital game design using Unity rather than boardgame design. For our final project, we pitched our own game ideas and worked in pairs to bring our games to life as a polished, playable videogame demo. Of course, I decided to bring back the good ol' Soulsnatcher!

For this project, I lead the art direction, 3D design, and music / SFX for this game, while my partner lead the gameplay mechanics and programming.

MAP DESIGN

My partner and I decided to make Soulsnatcher a 2D side-scrolling survival horror game, where you play as a child who's home has been invaded by the Soulsnatcher and snatched the souls of 13 of your friends. Your goal is to find all the 13 scattered souls of your fallen friends, while being hunted down by the Soulsnatcher.
